Ultrasound has over 50 years of use in medical practice and for some years in this field was given a really important technological breakthrough, which opened the way for the so-called Advanced Ultrasound.

A specialist in the field, Vice President of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) 2006-2009 and President of the Latin American Federation of Ultrasound Societies (FLAUS), 2001-2003; is Dr. Leandro Fernandez, who through his work and development of these new techniques, puts Venezuela at the forefront of Diagnostic Ultrasound.

BRIEF HISTORY OF FLAUS, LATIN AMERICAN FEDERATION OF ULTRASOUND

The FLAUS was founded in 1983, during the First Latin American Congress on Ultrasound held in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the intention to invite all National Societies of the Latino community, partners and doctors working in medical ultrasound, to join efforts for outreach and education in this field. The idea was proposed by Dr. Ricardo Parada (Uruguay) and well accepted by the community of sonographers at that time.

The organization consists of 12 members from across the continent: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

During these two decades, has organized ten successful FLAUS congresses in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela and was also the Host Society of the VII Congress of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, WFUMB held in Argentina in 1997.

The FLAUS promotes educational ultrasound programs and conferences to affiliated countries and maintain a close relationship with the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, through their representatives on the board and various committees.
